What Does “Skin Protection” Really Mean?

Posted by PRIORI Skincare on

When you guys think of skin protection, sunscreen is probably the first thing that comes to mind. At least it should have been. But with all the science that has been developed over the past five years or so, we know it is so much more than applying a simple sunscreen and going about your business. Think about it this way…. we always knew that pollution was bad for our lungs and bodies, but now we know that it’s worse than that; it causes free radicals that can prematurely age our skin by decreasing collagen production and increasing pigmentation. While some of us might remember teenage years filled with summers lathering our bodies in baby oil for a nice tan, we now know that it was extremely damaging.

Protecting your skin now includes shielding it from the sun, harmful pollution, the radiation from all the different screens we access and, as we need it, stress.

Naturally, skin protection during the summer is a whole different ballgame - the days are longer and the sun is stronger. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States with one in five Americans being diagnosed during their lifetime. What was once “protect yourself from the sun’s damaging rays with SPF” evolved to “limit your time in the sun between the hours of 10am and 4pm”, which has now evolved even further to “wear sunscreen every single day or die” (well, not exactly, but that’s what it feels like to me). So, what exactly does it take to protect our skin from all these daily ailments, and is sunscreen itself enough, regardless of the SPF rating?

The sun is much more than the light we can actually see. Sunlight can be broken down into four basic categories: VL (visible light), HEV (high-energy visible light), UV (ultraviolet), and IR (infrared light). Visible light is the light that is picked up by the human eye so, in this case, simple sunshine. When we see this, we know we need to protect our skin, by either applying sunscreen or simply covering our skin. HEV refers to blue light, both from the sun and from electronic devices. UV takes into consideration both UVA (rays that go deep into skin to cause premature aging and wrinkles) and UVB (the rays that cause a burn), which most basic sunscreen can block. While you may have read the term Infrared used in a positive way, as it can decrease inflammation and detoxify the skin and body, it can also be harmful when encountered in large frequencies. If you think about it, trapped infrared radiation, aka the heat that we feel, is what is leading to global warming, and if it can wreak havoc on the environment, just imagine what it could do to your skin!

So, while we know that finding a natural, mineral-based sunscreen is essential to skin protection, the answer is no, it’s not enough to truly protect our skin. Let’s go back to pollution and stress. Smog and the other human being-produced gunk that is constantly in the air we breathe is full of free radicals that break down our DNA until it can no longer replicate, causing serious skin damage. Now, free radicals are actually made in our body, but so are antioxidants, the remedy, that prevent the radicals from damaging your healthy cells.

While your body can normally handle the naturally occurring free radicals it produces, the mass amount coming from pollution and radiation as of late are too overpowering. These unstable molecules are searching for electrons in your body to make them whole again, a process that causes oxidative stress, which is what allows the DNA to start breaking down. You can eat antioxidant-rich food to fix the radicals inside your body, but the skin needs a topical solution. Skincare products rich in antioxidants like Vitamin C and turmeric provide a protecting layer against free radicals made by the environment, and are most effective when used morning and night. Just an FYI, most sunscreens do not contain antioxidants.

As a skincare company based on science, Priori is adamant on not only protecting your skin no matter the time of year, but nourishing it as well. Our difference is that our technology protects and repairs while adapting to your specific skin needs. The body comes with its own enzymes to repair DNA damage, but again, all the environmental and stress factors are breaking them down too quickly for our bodies to naturally keep up. One of the most crucial ingredients our products contain is the DNA Enzyme Complex. A natural mix of blue and green algae, microbe and mustard seed extract, this mimics our skin’s DNA enzymes, allowing to assist in the natural repair process while preventing further damage.

Now, we said that sunscreen is not enough. But what if we told you there was a product that had all of the ingredients necessary to really protect your skin from these stressors? Look no further than Priori’s Tetra. The first and only one of its kind on the market, this sunscreen provides four levels of protection: UVA and UVB, free radicals, high intensity radiation (the blue light from electronics), and even stress using DNA enzymes. Does your sunscreen do all that? Here’s a hint: it doesn’t, but it should.
